    Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)

    If you are highly skilled in your area, you can move to Australia to work and live there permanently. You can sponsor your family and relatives too. That is possible through the Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) program. Under this visa program, you don’t need sponsorship by an employer or anyone else. Skills are all that matters.

    This is an invites-only permanent visa to Australia. It is for skilled workers that are not sponsored by state or employer. Once you get this visa, you will be able to do the following:

    • This is a permanent visa, so you can stay in Australia indefinitely.
    • The visa has a travel component that expires 5 years after the date of the visa grant.
    • After five years, you will need to apply a Resident Return (RRV) visa (subclass 155 or 157) to re-enter Australia as a permanent resident.
    • You can work and study in Australia
    • You can enrol in Australia’s public health care scheme, Medicare
    • Sponsor your relatives to come to Australia
    • If eligible, you can become an Australian citizen

    Process

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • Have a relevant occupation on the 189 visa occupation list (MLTSSL),
    • Have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation,
    • Lodge an EOI (Expression of Interest) and be invited to apply,
    • Meet the points test pass mark of 65 points (as of 1 July 2018),
    • Be aged between 18 and 44 inclusive,
    • Show that you have Competent English level,
    • Meet health and character requirements

    Point Tested Stream:

    When you are applying for 189 visa Australia through point-tested stream, you must:

    • Have an occupation listed on the relevant skilled occupation list;
    • Have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation; and
    • Be invited to apply for subclass 189 visa.

    Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)

    The Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190) is a points-tested permanent-residency visa to Australia. Those interested must first submit an Expression of Interest to the Department of Home Affairs. Skill Select accepts EOI submissions throughout the Australian financial year. Points are issued based on your submission, and candidates with high ranking EOIs are invited to apply for the visa. With the Skilled Nominated Visa Subclass 190, you can:

    • You can work and study anywhere in Australia,
    • You can bring your close family and dependents to Australia,
    • You can sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence,
    • You can become an Australian citizen if you are eligible for that.

    Process

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • You must have an occupation on the relevant skilled list.
    • You must have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation.
    • You must be invited to apply for this visa.
    • You must be able to score 65 points or more because this visa is a points-tested visa.
    • You must be under 45 years old.
    • You must have at least a competent English.

    Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)

    The Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs also increased the regional migration level to 25.000 on 26 October 2019, and the expansion of the regional areas. After those changes, this visa has been a favourite to most people around the world who want to work and migrate to Australia. Successful applicants for the 491 visa get privileges such as:

    • Living and working in a specified region of Australia for five years
    • Living in Australia with family members
    • Pursuing educational opportunities in the country
    • Upgrading to permanent residency in 3 years (subject to eligibility) through the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191) – which commences on 16 November 2022.

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • You must be nominated to apply by a state or territory government agency, or an eligible relative must sponsor you.
    • You must have an occupation on the relevant skilled list.
    • You must have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation.
    • You must be invited to apply for this visa.
    • You must satisfy the points test
